It’s just over one year since I left the comfy confines of the public sector and launched Scribe TW. Truth be told, it wasn’t that comfy, but it was confining. Much as I valued the work of my colleagues in government, and was truly blown away by the intelligence and kindness of many that I worked with, it just wasn’t enough to make up for the disadvantages.

In the last year, I’ve been able to build a business that feels like me. I’m not one for a lot of feel-good self help stuff, but I really feel so proud of what I’ve built, and I’m so excited to take it to the next level.

I just got word that Scribe made it to the semi-finals of Canada’s “total mom pitch” – chosen by Scotiabank, Visa, Tangerine, and others, joining a Top 100 out of almost 1,000 applicants! I’m looking forward to working with some great women, and benefitting from the guidance and mentoring, even if I don’t win the big $$$! And the vote of confidence is fantastic.

This past year, I focused on testing the market, educating city-builders about what technical writing is and why they need it, and figuring out what I really enjoy offering. I was fortunate enough to have the backing of a City of Toronto Female Founders starter grant and mentoring, and I really hope they keep that going for other women, despite what are sure to be lean times ahead for local government.

It’s been full steam ahead and I’m still building the business, despite Covid-19, self-doubt, and money worries. Today Scribe is growing, and every day brings new projects where I learn something new, and feel appreciated (extra bonus!).

What’s next? Finding new clients, branching out to other markets, and building a network of associates. If you’re a new planner with excellent writing and editing skills, a graphic designer who loves cities, or want to learn more about our services, let me know! As Scribe continues to grow, I would love to make space for you!

And huge thanks to my wonderful friends, clients, and mentors for getting us this far!
